Tucson, Arizona - The Sonoran Rodeo Association is deeply saddened by the recent shootings which occurred Saturday, January 8, 2011. We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved1s and our prayers of strength and recovery to all affected by this senseless act of violence. We feel that Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), said it best this morning when he said, Our community is devastated by this. Our community has a million people, but it ’s small. We ’re all feeling it and wondering what to do next. We mourn the dead and optimistically hold a prayerful stance for the survivors. A friend of Rep. Giffords reported this morning “Went in to see Gabbie this morning. Her head is fully bandaged and tubes in every orifice. She is in a drug induced coma. A veteran came by, presented his purple heart, and left without a word.... it is beautiful and it lies on her blanket. Family has gathered and all shuffle between the rooms of friends and staffers who remain hospitalized.” This is moment of action and we invite our members locally, nationally, & internationally to assist Tucson in our recovery.
Donate Blood
Tucson’s blood supply was affected by this tragedy. The Red Cross is asking individuals to donate blood as soon as possible. For more information please go to www.redcrossblood.org. We understand that so many of you are out of the area but we ask that support your local blood banks in solidarity with those affected by this tragedy.
Commemorate the Heroic Acts
Daniel Hernandez Jr., an openly gay 20-year-old intern for Gabrielle Giffords is credited with providing vital assistance on the scene. He was standing about 30 feet from Giffords during the “Congress on Your Corner” event outside a Safeway store near Tucson. When the gunshots began, Hernandez ran toward them and began checking the pulses of people who’d been hit. When Hernandez got to Giffords, he used his hand to apply pressure to the entry wound on her forehead. He pulled her into his lap and held her upright so she wouldn’t choke on her blood.
We also want to acknowledge the3 people who stopped the gunman. Currently we do not have information on their heroic acts but the Pima County Sherriff’s Office has confirmed that their action saved lives.
For those of us who live in this community straddle the2 identities which inhabit this area, the incredible tolerance and understanding which houses a diverse community and those who see violence as the only answer. President Obama said, “Listening to the hopes and concerns of her neighbors – that is the essence of what our democracy is all about,” he said. “That is why this is more than a tragedy for those involved. It is a tragedy for Arizona and a tragedy for our entire country.” Rep. Giffords has courageously provided skilled leadership which has given voice to this community. She is a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ community on every level. She has participated in our celebrations, defended us in the face of violence, and supported our basic civil rights. Rep. Giffords recently quoted Lincoln which she condensed for her page:
“With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”
Sonoran Rodeo Association would like to apologize for our website being down..
