Not that I am advising anyone to do this. 1 thing I had done is I would hang out bareback on1 of the mares, just slowing on & off, and walking among the rest and communicating with the1s who wanted to. It always seemed that the scared1s would get a sense that if the others trusted me, that it was alright to trust me as well. Of course taking some carrots and what not helped as well. :-) Learning how they communicate with the others is important. As you sit back and watch you will find their comforts, their discomforts, the social dynamic, and when is a good time to approach or become approachable. But like I said, I am not advising anyone to be riding around a herd jumping on and off their horses. It is just what I found the best way to get to know unfriendly horses.

i have grown up around horses all my life in particular Arabs.I find them a challenge as they are a very giving horse but definately not for the faint hearted or cruel or foolish or insensitive person.but a good1 is a mate for life

I agree with all the postings here. It depends on the horse, take little steps and always remember to back off when you need to, and never force an issue. Goodluck, it is very satisfying, & rewarding but it can be hard and frustrating work also. The reward is having a great trusting companion at the end. And that makes the journey worthwhile.

i have 8 abused horses some did not trust humans at all.. took some time years for some but have gained their trust.. i found in order for them to trust you you have to trust them... i would start off sitting next to them when they ate.. afet a few days would slowly touch their leg and just spend time getting to know them nothing more rewarding than to have their trust and love after what they had been through.. had1 welsh cobb.. you could brush ride but not touch her face took 5 years to be able to do that.. so just give it time and love

spend time with them speak slowly and calmly, be there in the same spot all the time so they can see that u are not here to harm them, it will be for some a long time to trust u but it will come over time Never raise ur voice against him or her be calm and avoid to make quick moves. sit there for hours and look what he or she will responde.

i also owned/worked with several abused horses fir long time. i found getting them out of a "training atmosphere" and into just a farm/home atmosphere, helped tremendously, just took things slowly and1 step at a time.worked to build trust between them and i,it took a long time for some, others came around sooner, each was different and i tried to work with their personalities.

for the horses that you have to regain trust, just be there, put yourself in the pen and do not try to connect to the horse(s), but just sit still, open for them to come to you, It's their choice, no forcing ourselves on them.

The Horse Whisperer
Any cowboys out there that handle hot blooded horses? Do you train them?, or get them socialized? Also, how do you handle abused or injured horses that were choosen not to get put down. How do you regain their trust? Please share your stories and techniques on these, or any other topics involving the care of horses. Tks.
