The term Cowboy in the United States came about when adult men fought in the civil war and many men died. Cattle ranchers could not find men to do cattle ranching, so they found boys willing to working the cattle. There were many boys who wanted to work the cattle because that for the first time gave them the ability to get money. Boys did their work and when given time off would go to town to buy things including drinking and having sex with girls/women. They were raunchy, filthy and smelly but during those days it was all acceptable.
